Vamos Village

Location and History

Vamos village is located in Chania perfecture, in West Crete on the foothills of ‘The White Mountains’, 25 km from the beautiful city of Chania.
The architectural heritage is well-preserved and Vamos is one of the most attractive traditional destinations of the area: a preserved traditional stone road, the old neighbourhood, well painted Chapels of Virgin Mary (monument of 13th century), and Karidi Monastery 13th-19th, with the most spectacular scenery of an old olive press with 12 arches.

There are two mini-markets, bakery, butcher, pizzeria, creperie, a traditional grocery shop, many cafés (with free Wi-Fi), a post-office, bank (ATM), police station, pharmacy, health center and two petrol stations.
Moreover the village is well known for the delicious Cretan food, especially after renovation of the ‘Bloumosifis Tavern’ in 1993. People from the cities as Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion drive to Vamos for a nice village atmosphere and for the delicious local food.

Local festivals and celebrations

For the Greek Orthodox Church, the most important Christian festival is Easter. Some of the most beautiful hymns of Eastern religious music are sung during the Holy Week. “Panigyria" are the festivities which can be found around rural Greece, connected with the celebration of a Saint.
The day of “Klidonas” is celebrated every year on the 23th of June, a day connected with St. John, although it is based on the pagan celebration of the God Apollo, the Zoroastrian adoration of the fire and the longest day of the year.
The “Jazz in July” festival is a jazz festival which happens every July in Vamos, organized by the “Vamos-Art and thought” company located in Vamos, which organises mainly cultural events.

There are many interesting villages around Vamos. In Apokoronas area you will find picturesque villages, traditionally preserved with hidden corners and peaceful environment. Even sandy beaches are just 7 km from Vamos.
