Agricultural activities & local festivals in Vamos and Apokoronas area

Wheat Harvest

By the end of June in the fields of village Nerohori, we join the harvest, the fruit of the labour of the last months together with harvest meal (oven fresh bread) and the cool village wine.

Wine making

At the end of August and until the end of September, the people of Vamos are occupied in gathering grapes and making their wine. Visitors can join them at the vineyards for the grape harvest and then at the wine press for the wine making. They will also be able to see the preparation of traditional dishes made using wine and the "must" (grape residue)..

Raki production (tsikoudia)

October is also the month of raki production usually it takes place from 10 to 20 and 40 days after the grapes' collection) which is a rather interesting procedure. Visitors may visit the local "rakokazana" the places where raki is produced and enjoy not only the procedure but also the several fiestas that always happen in this season. Just be careful with the raki consumption!

Olive harvest

From the end of November until the end of December the harvesting of olives takes place. Visitors can go to the farms early in the morning and help with the olive gathering before enjoying a light meal with the locals under the olive trees.

Cheese making

From November to June is the best period to see how the locals prepare: graviera "hard cheese", mintsithra and anthotiro "soft cheeses", and feta cheese, (mostly hand made process, machines are used only in the first part of the process).

  • Celebretion of "Virgin Mary" in Kefalas, Litsarda-15 August
  • Celebration of "Klidonas" (fire religious fiesta) in Vamos-24 June
